Summary

The girls listen to Gemma's mother for a short while. Soon they get bored and decide to take the magic back with them and play around with it for a while. While they're playing with it, they find out that magic is also evil. Gemma then learns a ghastly secret. Mary Dowd's friend Sarah is actually Circe and the two of them committed a horrible crime together. They killed the daughter of Mother Elena, the gypsy, Carolina. Gemma is so shocked. She also learns that Sarah never died in the fire. Gemma really wanted to find a photo of Mary and Sarah, and when she does, she is shocked to find a picture of her mother with the name Mary Dowd underneath it.

  1. This part always made me wonder. Of Sarah never died in the fire, then why did people think she did? And where did she die? I found this part a bit confusing so I re-read it. This post helped me better understand this part in the book.

  2. I was on edge after I read this part. I was in shock about how Sarah is still alive. Since she is clearly evil, knowing that she is still alive after all that happened makes me wonder about what she has been doing. Knowing that she also used the magic for evil, and that she was the cause of all the problems in the realms makes me wonder about the kind of power she holds. Before Sarah decided to use the evil power, there was complete balance within the realms. Gemma needs to know what to look for in her search for Sarah and Mary so when she decides to go looking for a picture she sees that Mary is really her mother. This is another conflict that comes up in the book.
